General Dentistry

Xray used in general dentistry in Blackwood

General dentistry includes such things as examinations, oral hygiene, x-rays, mouthguards, nightguards, fissure sealants, and fillings. Complex dentistry includes root canal treatment, crown and bridgework, and implants. Complex dentistry is also a combination of all facets of dentistry.

  • Examinations – a comprehensive examination of your whole mouth will be carried out. This will usually involve
    • examination of your teeth with charting
    • soft tissue examination including cancer check
    • digital x-rays to check between the teeth and under current fillings
    • we sometimes need to also take moulds of your teeth for treatment planning

At these appointments we can come up with a treatment plan, and organise treatment visits that suit you. We welcome all questions, as this is the only way to make sure we treat you to the best of our ability, with the results you are after. We can offer different options for different results, to best suit you and your lifestyle.

  • Oral hygiene – hygiene is important for several reasons
    • clean teeth and healthy gums leads to a healthier lifestyle, and can minimise other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes
    • clean teeth usually means less dental work needs to be done
    • fresh clean breath

Regular brushing (twice daily) as well as flossing or use of Piksters is recommended

  • Mouthguards – anyone playing sport should wear a mouthguard to try and prevent injuries to the teeth from a collision, knock, hit or fall during a game or practice. These come in any colour or even multiple colours including all AFL teams.

  • Nightguards – if you grind or clench your teeth during sleep, a nightguard worn over either the upper or lower teeth, can help protect the teeth from wearing down, chipping, or fracture. A nightguard can also minimise tension headaches

  • Fissure sealants – a sealant can be placed over deep grooves and pits of back teeth to help prevent decay

  • Fillings – a filling restores a tooth that has decayed, broken or cracked back to function. We generally use tooth coloured resin fillings. Other filling materials include porcelain, gold, and amalgam.

  • Digital x-rays to check between the teeth and under existing fillings
  • We sometimes need to take moulds of your teeth for treatment planning

At these appointments we can come up with a treatment plan, and organise treatment visits that suit you.
