When the nerve or pulp of a tooth becomes inflamed (infected, abscessed), root canal treatment can be carried out to remove the infection and restore the tooth back to function. This is done by making a small hole through the crown of the tooth, to access the nerve or pulp chamber and its canal(s). Once cleaned the nerve canals are sealed with a root filling. A suitable filling or crown will then need to be placed to cover this tooth and prevent further breakdown.
